The Impact of Internationalization on the Openness and Tolerance of the University Environment

President of the Erasmus Student Network Poland. Active in the organisation since autumn 2019, at the beginning at the local level as the President of the ESN PK section, then at the national level as the Education & Youth Ambassador coordinator. A graduate of the Faculty of Computer Science and Telecommunications of the Cracow University of Technology, currently works in the IT industry. Passionate about all forms of academic mobility, a proud member of the Erasmus Generation. For 4 years, she has been supporting outgoing Polish students and incoming international students. In her free time she visits her international friends traveling around Europe.

Thao has been in charge of international cooperation at the Hanoi University of Mining and Geology (HUMG) since 2008. Prior to that, she received a master’s degree in teaching didactics and methodology from Vietnam National University, Hanoi and worked as a French teacher at Ecole Semi – Publique des Technologies Informatiques de Hanoi. Since assuming the role of international cooperation coordinator of HUMG, she has focused on promoting HUMG’s bilateral and multilateral partnerships with international partners, coordinating faculty and student exchange programs, organizing seminars and conferences, managing and coordinating projects in internationalization and capacity building. She has experience in developing and coordinating projects, especially Erasmus+ and British Council funded projects in the frame of UK-VN Higher Education Partnership Network. Considering AGH UST as a strategic partner of HUMG, she has actively strengthened a comprehensive partnership with AGH UST and had a co-presentation on this topic at the 4th International Conference on Scientific Research Cooperation between Vietnam and Poland.

Cahyani Satiya Pratiwi, S.S. is the Manager of Internationalization Program in the Directorate of Global Engagement (GE) at the Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember, Surabaya, Indonesia. She is charge of mobility programs & agreements under Erasmus+, AUN/SEED-Net, ACNET-EngTech, WAEJUC, UMAP and other international consortia and manages the institutional database for international mobility. Her duties also include the management of workshops and the coordination of Liaison Officers of Internationalization. Previously, she was the administrator for international student admission, the coordinator for Training of English as the Medium of Instruction for ITS lecturers, and organised international visits and MoU/A with international partners.

Executive Director of the Fulbright Program in Poland. Prior to that, Justyna served as CEO of Education for Democracy Foundation (FED) – a leading Polish non-governmental organization operating in the area of the former Soviet Union. Lifetime non-profit sector volunteer and worker. Justyna is a qualified trainer in Polish, English, and Russian, conducting workshops in the areas of global education, international cooperation, and project management. Ms. Janiszewska received a Master’s degree in political science with specialization in international relations from the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań and a Bachelor’s degree in management. Alumna of the School of Human Rights of the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights, the Management Program NGO PROMENGO and the IVLP – International Visitor Leadership Program of the U.S. Department of State. Currently a student of Executive MBA Program at Kozminski University.

Michał Krobicki published more than one hundred fifty scientific papers on: stratigraphy, palaeontology, regional geology, palaeogeography, plate tectonics, palaeoceanography, palaeoclimatology. He gave more than one hundred seminars/lectures during international conferences/symposiums and some invited lectures (outside of Poland). His main field of interest is focus to history of the Alpine structures from Africa (Morocco – High Atlas) trough European Alps/Carpathians and Himalaya-Karakoram-Tibet realms, especially from Jurassic perspective.
He is the leader of the International GeosCience Programme 710 (IGCP 710) under the auspices of UNESCO (2020-2024) untitled: Western Tethys meets Eastern Tethys, and memeber of several others IGCP projects.
He is the Editor-in-Chief of Geotourism magazine – international journal of geosciences, geoparks and Earth sciences.
At the AGH UST he is Coordinator for bilateral cooperation with universities of Southeast Asian countries (including Nepal) on both scientific and educational levels. His long-term cooperation with these countries increases impact on strengthening academic ties and openness.

Mirko Varano serves as Senior Advisor International Projects at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden. Mirko has been active in the field of internationalisation of higher education for the past 30 years. He covered different positions of responsibility at the Turin Technical University between 1992–2008 in the field of international relations. He was appointed as CLUSTER network coordinator from 2008 to 2010. He was previously internationalisation officer at KTH Royal Institute of Technology where he was appointed a member of the international strategy group from 2013 to 2016. Mirko developed and participated in over 100 EU funded projects in the field of internationalization, many of which as coordinator. He is currently an adviser for international projects at the same institution, with a focus on Erasmus+ and university networks. Mirko holds a Master’s degree in Political Science with a specialisation in International Relations and European Studies from the University of Turin, Italy. He acts as KTH institutional representative in a number of university networks and covers the role of Key Liaison Officer for the European University alliance Unite! Mirko is the elected Chair of the EAIE Expert Community European Collaborative Programmes for the 2020-2022 and 2022–2024 term.

Professor Rafał Wiśniowski’s research interests are focused on technical and technological problems of directional drillings for the mining and oil industry, environmental protection, environmental engineering, and energy economy. The professor was the manager and executor of eight grants. He is the author of more than 230 scientific papers and reports, 10 monographs, and 11 books as a co-author. He is also a co-author of more than 100 studies and expert opinions prepared for industry and state administration units.

Prof. Rafał Wiśniowski has devoted all his teaching and research activities to AGH UST. At the university, he served, among others, as Head of the Department of Drilling and Geoengineering, Dean of the Faculty of Drilling, Oil and Gas, and Chairman of the Council of the Discipline of Environmental Engineering, Mining and Power Engineering. He has been an active member of the AGH Senate, serving on the budget and staff committees.

The professor is a happy husband and father of a grown daughter.

Professor Małkowski has been working at the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Resources Management (former Faculty of Mining and Geoengineering) in the Department of Geomechanics, Civil Engineering and Geotechnics for 30 years. He deals with rock mechanics, rock engineering, underground mining, mining support, ground control, and rockburst phenomena. He is the expert of the Polish State Mining Authority for rockbolting, rockburst hazard analysis, and pit shafts lining design. Co-author of over 350 projects and reports for coal mines. Author and co-author of 6 monographs and over 160 papers.

Professor Janusz Gołaś’s research interests are focused on analytical environmental chemistry. He was appointed as a Head of the Dept. of Environm. Sciences at AGH-UST between 2000-11. Professor Gołaś served as a Member of the Committee of Analytical Chemistry of the Polish Acad. of Sciences between 2000-23. He was the Head of the Dept. of Coal Chemistry and Environmental Sciences from 2011 to 2020, AGH Rector’s Proxy for International Studies from 2006 to 2016, and the Head of the Dept. of Env. Chem. at AGH UST from 1995 to 2000. Professor Gołaś was the Director of the Intern. School of Technology at AGH UST (in collaboration with the IIT, Chicago, USA) between 1995-2005. He was a visitor at the National Science Foundation, Washington D.C. in 1995 at the University of Illinois at Urbana, USA, between 1990-1991 and at the State Univ. of New York at Buffalo, USA from 1984 to 1986. He was the Principal Investigator for 13 projects financed by state institutions and two educational projects financed by the Polish-American Maria Curie Fund. Project Manager for a ten-year project funded by the Kosciuszko Found. Inc., (NY, USA, 1 million $). Between 2011-2015 he was the Manager of the KIC Innovation Project CoalGas financed by the European Institute of Technology (4.5 million €). Supervisor of 13 doctorates, co-author of several hundred publications. At present, the coordinator for the collaboration of AGH UST with the USA. Member of the Presidential National Council of Development.

Gregory Parisi is a PhD candidate in the department of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Nuclear Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. His doctoral research is on dynamic switching of interfacial phenomena; focusing on topics such as heat transfer, water-oil separation, and fog water harvesting. Greg was awarded a Fulbright Research Fellowship in Poland for the 2022 academic year. He is currently conducting research at AGH University of Science and Technology within the Electrospun Fibers Group.

Doctorate in humanities in the discipline of linguistics in 2007 at the University of Warsaw and habilitation in social sciences in the discipline of management and quality in 2022 at the Silesian University of Technology.

Assistant Professor (Adjunct) at Academic Centre for Materials and Nanotechnology of AGH University of Krakow. Founder of Student Scientific Association of Military Constructions “Adamantium” AGH. Member of the Polish Ceramic Society and American Chemical Society. His distinguished Ph.D. diploma was done in close cooperation with Hokkaido University, partially during the ERASMUS+ program. During his studies, he was also invited to research facilities in Italy, North Macedonia, and Switzerland. Laureate of multiple pro-quality and Rector’s awards. Currently developing new materials for spintronics and superconductivity in cooperation with Basque Nanoscience Cooperative Research Center.

Associate Professor in the Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering Department at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Professor Carter primarily teaches courses in materials science and engineering, and his research interests lie in the simulation and characterization of material processing methods. Before moving into the world of academia, he worked in the aerospace industry first for Lockheed-Martin and then for a manufacturing facility that produced aluminum extrusions principally for Boeing. Over the last several years, he has enjoyed a research collaboration and partnership with the AGH University of Science and Technology and with the Cracow University of Technology in Krakόw. These have provided him the opportunity to lead students from Miami on study abroad programs in Poland. Just like his wife and daughter, professor Hamilton loves to travel, has been to Krakόw many times, and loves the city and Poland.

In charge of NAWA Welcome to Poland programme that supports internationalisation at home, foreign promotion of Polish HEIs and developing International Alumni networks. Piotr holds PhD in sociology. He has long experience in programme and project management in public administration. He worked for the Ministry of Science and Higher Education from 2004 to 2018. Piotr was active in the field of research policy development, international cooperation and implementation of digital projects. He participated in the preparation of Open Access policy recommendations in Poland. A former Polish delegate to the Programme Committee for Future and Emerging Technologies in Horizon 2020 and FP7.

A graduate of the Jagiellonian University in Krakow and WSB National-Louis University. Orientalist, interpreter, and advisor with more than three years of experience in an international environment in the Middle East. For eighteen years associated with AGH University of Krakow, the International School of Technology, the Department of International Relations, and currently the Centre for International Affairs, where he works as the Deputy Director. MBA graduate.
He gained experience at the university in the implementation of educational projects such as FSS Scholarship and Training Fund (EEA grants, Norway grants), Erasmus (Lifelong Learning Program, LLP), or Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange programs (Foreign Promotion Program, SPINAKER – Intensive International Education Programs, Welcome to Poland) and working in the Academic-Economic Network of Mining and Metallurgical Institutions or Magalhaes Network. He works as a team member of WP2 mobility and multilingualism in the European University UNIVERSEH project.

Mateusz Michałek is an active member of Erasmus Student Network at AGH University of Krakow. A graduate of Mechanical Engineering at AGH, currently studying Hydrogen Energy for Master’s. He participates in AGH Racing Team, which competes against other top universities around the world, racing in student made race cars. In his free time he loves to travel and has visited almost every continent, has a great passion for cars in all possible aspects.

Head of Section of International Agreements and Projects at the Centre for International Affairs. Aleksandra received a Master’s degree in law from Andrzej Frycz Modrzewski Krakow University and Bachelor’s degree in history from Jagiellonian University. She also graduated MBA Program at the WSB National-Louis University.Associated with AGH University for eight years. She is responsible for identifying potential international partners and negotiating agreements and contracts for academic collaborations. Aleksandra is also involved in the management of various international projects, including the Erasmus+ programme with Partner Countries. She works closely with faculty members, students, staff, and international partners to ensure successful project implementation and outcomes. Aleksandra regularly attends conferences and seminars to stay up-to-date on best practices in international education and network with colleagues from around the world. Janusz Supernak is Professor Emeritus at San Diego State University. For 25 years, until August 2022, he served as Chair of the Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering at SDSU. His areas of expertise are: Transportation Systems and Traffic Engineering. He is an author of over 100 publications. He developed a new generation of transportation planning models and was PI on the widely publicized world-first Congestion Pricing project that proved that freeway congestion can be effectively controlled by pricing mechanisms. He brought over 4 million dollars in externally-sponsored research. He is a member of editorial boards of two journals in his field. For the last 30 years, he was Faculty Advisor to the nationally-ranked Student Chapter of American Society of Civil Engineers. In collaboration with Dr. Golaś from AGH UST, he pioneered Study Abroad Programs at his College. He serves as a voluntary organist in his church. As a singer/songwriter, he recorded three albums. His songs have 4200 fans on Radio Airplay in over 120 countries and over 750,000 views on YouTube. His song „I Found My Perfect City” was the winner in the contest for the best song about San Diego. His song „My Lullaby” was the title song on the Fryderyk-nominated album by Aga Zaryan. For his activities, Dr. Supernak received several prestigious American and Polish awards, among them „Krzyż Oficerski Orderu Zasługi” from the President of Poland. He is an avid table tennis player, winning in 2022 the gold medal in California-wide competition in his age group. He lives with his wife Edyta in the picturesque mountains of the Crest district of San Diego.
